Terracon is seeking a National Director for its Site Characterization/Investigation and Remediation (SC-REM) practice to provide leadership in the Environmental Service Line and local teams overseeing environmental consulting projects across the United States.

In conjunction with the Environmental Service Line Director and executive leadership, this role is responsible for setting the direction of the SC-REM practice, developing and implementing growth strategies, and guiding teams to deliver innovative solutions for straightforward to complex site investigation, characterization and remediation projects. The National Director will also support local operations to make sure projects meet regulatory requirements, support sustainability, and achieve client goals, while also advancing the use of innovative investigation methods, data management and remediation technologies.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys practice building, solving challenging environmental problems, influencing industry standards, advancing technology, and building strong client and internal practitioner relationships.


As a key member of Terracon’s Environmental Service Line leadership team, the National Director for SC-REM will drive growth and operational excellence for a business unit generating over $100 million annually. The role works closely with executive and regional teams to expand the SC-REM practice’s market presence, improve profitability, and maintain high safety and quality standards across our national network. The National Director will also help align the SC-REM practice with Terracon’s 2030 Strategic Plan and lead efforts for continued growth into 2026 and beyond.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and execute the national SC-REM strategy aligned with ENVSL and corporate goals.
  • Prepare and drive an annual SI-REM Practice Plan for short-term growth aligned with markets and capabilities.
  • Identify new and/or under-engaged markets, provided services, and client relationships.
  • Guide service optimization, diversification as necessary and Terracon pursuit differentiation strategies.
  • Lead, align and support Practice leadership nationwide to deliver consistent, high‑value outcomes on larger, more complex SC-REM opportunities.
  • Champion safety, quality, and innovation across all offerings, ensuring Safe Right Procedures (SRP), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and Site‑Specific Health and Safety Plans (SSHASPs) are current and effectively implemented.

Financial Stewardship

  • Own P&L performance for SC-REM, including revenue growth, margin improvement, pricing strategy, and cost management.
  • Lead annual planning, budgeting, and forecasting in collaboration with ENVSL leadership, Corporate Finance, and Operations.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) (e.g., growth, backlog, utilization, win rates) and deploy methods to optimize performance.
  • Forecast personnel and capital needs to meet revenue growth and profitability targets.
  • Provide insight into additional KPIs that can provide useful information related to Practice financial performance.

Operational Excellence & Risk Management

  • Ensure safe, compliant, and high‑quality delivery across all projects and geographies.
  • Serve as Project Executive (PE) and/or Subject Matter Expert (SME) on complex, high‑risk, and high‑impact projects.
  • Drive continuous improvement, standardization, and risk controls through our quality program.
  • Provide leadership in developing and leveraging data, digital tools, and automation to improve delivery efficiency, quality, and insight.
  • Work with Senior Practitioners to assess project risk and provide feedback to project team on quantification of risk and appropriate contingent pricing.

People & Culture

  • Foster a culture of safety, accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Attract, develop, and retain Practice leaders and senior technical talent; build robust succession plans for replacement of personnel leaving Terracon.
  • Lead change management—use webinars, forums, and communities of practice to build understanding and adoption of new initiatives consistent with the direction of the ENVSL.
  • Continue to contribute to developing advanced technical and professional career paths tailored to SC-REM practitioners.
  • Work with Senior and Project-Level practitioners on developing “soft skills” related to professional career development to compliment technical skill enhancement.

Clients, Markets & Growth

  • Lead national business development and capture strategies across priority sectors and accounts for the Practice.
  • Partner with Sector Leaders, Client Development Specialists and National Account Managers to expand key Client relationships as well as cross‑selling Terracon’s broader services.
  • Grow opportunities through existing on‑call contracts; evaluate and secure new municipal and multi‑jurisdictional on‑call agreements.
  • Drive straightforward to advanced SC-REM work through community renewal and private development projects.
  • Enhance teaming with research, technology, and specialized partners to compete for complex, innovation‑driven projects.
  • Represent Terracon practitioners as a collaborative of SME and “thought leaders” via conferences, publications, social media, and internal/external webinars.

Communications, Insights & Reporting

  • Maintain transparent, timely communications on strategy, plans, budgets, and resource needs.
  • Provide periodic “State of the Practice” updates and real‑time “State of the Science/Regulatory Landscape” insights impacting SC-REM.
  • Collaborate with Marketing & Communications on practice updates, press releases, social media input development and thought leadership for internal and external audiences.
  • Insight into visualization of project metrics including scheduling, budget management and other related project deliverables working with the Client on Terracon-developed platforms (Compass, PIVVOT, etc.).
  • Lead project debriefing on selected projects to gain insights into project execution enhancements.

Qualifications and Experience

Required

  • Safety mindset that pervades all Practice projects and pursuits.
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering, geoscience, or related technical discipline (Master’s or PhD preferred).
  • 20+ years of relevant experience with demonstrated success leading multi‑regional or national environmental practices.
  • Professional Engineer (PE), Professional Geologist (PG) or equivalent professional registration/certification; ability to obtain multi‑state licensure.
  • Strong business and financial acumen with direct P&L, budgeting, forecasting, and pricing experience.
  • Proven track record in strategic growth, business development, and key Client leadership and acquisition/development.
  • Exceptional communication, leadership, and change‑management skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Preferred

  • Experience integrating digital tools, data analytics, and automation into project delivery and decision‑making.
  • Demonstrated success leading innovation initiatives and deploying new technologies at scale.
  • Active involvement with community non‑profit organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to embed sustainability into project delivery and client solutions.
  • Recognized thought leadership in SC-REM (e.g., publications, conference speaking, standards committees).
