Terracon is growing and hiring Senior Staff Scientist for our South Texas Region! As a Senior Staff Scientist, you will have a balance of working both in the office and field. You will be assisting clients in the evaluation of properties for environmental due diligence, by conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments. You will also have the opportunity to conduct and/or assist in the assessment of properties for the presence of Waters of the United States (WOTUS) and for the presence of asbestos mold and/or lead-containing paint. You will prepare reports and review and analyze data to evaluate how to resolve environmental impacts to the satisfaction of regulatory agencies such as the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), the Railroad Commission of Texas (RRC) and/or the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This position will report directly to the Office Manager and will work closely with other Environmental Service Line team members in the Corpus Christi and San Antonio offices in a mentorship and leadership capacity. Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Work safely in accordance with Terracon’s Rules to Live By and our Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture. Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment, demonstrates safety practices, and promotes pre-task planning for all projects.
  • Proactively engage with clients, Account Managers, and Senior Project Managers to define project scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Manage projects in accordance with Terracon’s Project Quality Manual.
  • Design, communicate, and implement a project plan for completing the project.
  • Oversee the implementation of environmental assessments.
  • Identify, develop, and gather the resources to complete the project. This may include developing project schedules, budgets, and forecasts; and selecting materials, equipment, project staff, and external contractors.
  • Partner with other departments or offices to secure specialized resources for the project.
  • Conduct meetings and prepare reports to communicate the status of the project.
  • Set priorities, assign tasks, and coordinates project staff to meet project targets and milestones.
  • Coordinate with Senior Staff to ensure appropriate oversight is in place and sufficient time allowed for reviews of all critical junctures.
  • Coordinate with accounting for financial management of business intelligence, invoicing, and collections.
  • Develop an understanding and be aware of project-related risk and be familiar with Terracon’s risk management policies.
  • Conduct client development activities and work with our marketing team to continue and develop environmental services in Corpus Christi, South Texas, and across the Texas Division.
  • Engage in the market by actively participating in local professional groups, societies, and/or committees in coordination with our client development staff
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Geology, Engineering, or similar scientific degree.
  • Minimum of 5+ years of related experience.
  • Five or more years of experience in the performance of Phase I and/or Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, NEPA document writing, Asbestos assessments, or Mold assessments.
  • Two or more years of project management experience.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to meet with clients and articulate project findings and present recommendations.
  • Possess strong writing skills.
  • Willingness to learn and market the other service lines that Terracon offers such as Geotechnical, Materials Testing and Facilities Consulting.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
Preferences:
  • Professional Geologist (P.G.) or Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in the state of Texas, or the ability to obtain within 12 months of onboarding.
  • Working knowledge of RCRA, TRRP, and PST regulations in Texas.
  • Documented success with APARs and closures under TCEQ programs such as the PST, TRRP, and VCP.
  • Understanding of regulations regarding WOTUS.
  • Experience in obtaining a variety of USACE Nationwide Permits.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
Compensation will vary based upon experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors.
