Job Description
Are you passionate about safety and committed to protecting others? Our California Division is seeking a Safety Specialist to join the team and help foster a safe, healthy, and compliant work environment.
The California Division consists of 289 employees across ten office locations. This position can be based in one of our six larger offices: Sacramento, Concord, Lodi, Laguna Hills, Colton or Carson.
General Responsibilities:
As the direct partner at the regional operations level, responsible for coordinating safety, health, and environmental programs. The Safety Specialist will work closely with the corporate safety team and offices within the California Division. Provide proactive support and guidance in support of Terracon’s commitment to Incident and Injury Free work. The role ensures the consistent and excellent application of safety programs by championing safety leadership, providing safety subject matter expertise, supporting initiatives, and coordinating compliance with Terracon’s overall safety policies. This role also ensures Terracon’s compliance with the safety expectations of our clients.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
Assist with the implementation of safety policies, initiatives, and strategies at the regional level to align with Terracon’s IIF culture, Strategic Plan, and Purpose, Vision, and Values.
Ensure radiation safety and compliance by auditing monthly radiation safety inspections and audits with local Radiation Safety Officers (RSOs). Assist Corporate RSO with license amendment processing by collecting and organizing required submittals. Partner and provide feedback for improvement to the designated local office RSO. Periodically perform inspections with the Local RSO to provide mentoring, training, and assess opportunities for improvement.
Ensure facilities, equipment, and employees operate in a safe manner by auditing monthly office and lab safety inspections. Partner and provide feedback to the Lab and Operations Managers for continual safe work in Terracon facilities. Periodically perform inspections with the Local Safety Coordinator (LSC) to provide mentoring, training, and assess opportunities for improvement.
Support IIF driving by monitoring, coaching, and reporting on regional driving practices and compliance. Ensure all drivers have valid driver’s licenses, support managers with GeoTab coaching, and ensure vehicles meet safety & inspection requirements.
Oversee regional commercial driver operations and DOT compliance including maintenance of valid driver’s license & medical cards, DOT vehicle inspections, eLog oversight, and supporting drivers with DOT roadside inspections.
Identify and analyze safety related key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess the effectiveness of safety strategies and make data driven decisions. Provide advice and coaching to the Director of Regional Operations on the use of leading and lagging indicators to improve safety performance.
Support regions by delivering safety training including monthly safety topics, nuclear gauge user, hands-on IIF driver, commercial driver compliance, processes & practices, equipment operations, and first aid & CPR.
Track, audit, and provide oversight for new hire safety training and employee onboarding experience.
Proactively review and address near miss reports. When necessary, follow up and spearhead corrective actions.
Coordinate with Corporate safety team on incident corrective actions to ensure prompt and efficient completion by operations.
Coordinate the activities of Local Safety Coordinators. Lead monthly safety discussions, audit responsibilities, mentor, and coach.
Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
Visit project sites and laboratory operations to perform Safety Check Ins, Driver Safety Check Ins, provide training, and audit compliance with safety policies.
Be responsible for maintaining quality safety standards on all projects.
Model safety leadership and demonstrate IIF practices.
Exhibit confidence when having conversations and documenting accountability when necessary.
Strive for continuous improvement and professional growth by becoming a subject matter expert in areas of safety that affect Terracon’s core services.
Maintain a passion for IIF in collaborating with employee-owners to effectively deliver a consistently excellent IIF experience for our employee-owners.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety or a related field. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 4 years’ experience in one of Terracon’s core services.
Basic knowledge of accident prevention, risk management and general working knowledge of OSHA construction safety regulations.
Basic knowledge DOT (FMCSA) Commercial Driver requirements.
Ability and willingness for overnight travel. It is anticipated that each office in the division will be visited at least once a quarter at a minimum. Covering all of California means this would require an estimated six to ten overnights per month. Project sites requiring safety oversight may also be visited.
Effective communication skills including ability to coach, present and train.
Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels.
A valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history may be required.
Required Certification:
First Aid/CPR (American Red Cross or equivalent)
The expected salary range for this position is listed below. The base range may be adjusted based on the specific location of the applicant. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
Minimum $69000 - Maximum $106900
