Our Portland office is growing and seeking a Department Manager to lead our well-established Construction Materials Testing and Special Inspections services team. This position provides opportunities to work on high profile vertical high-rise, renewable energy, large commercial, data center and infrastructure construction projects throughout Oregon and Eastern Washington. Our presence in the Portland market started in 1998, and we have a long-standing tradition of serving our community and clients with solutions for the natural and built environment.

General Responsibilities:


As Department Manager, you will lead a team and support the growth of over 30 professionals, including Project Managers, Special Inspectors, Technicians, a Lab Manager, and Laboratory personnel. You will also be part of a fantastic and high-functioning PNW leadership team that guides over 100 professionals in construction materials testing and special inspections, geotechnical engineering, environmental consulting, environmental planning, and landscape architecture services.

In this role, you will Lead a high-performing team to deliver quality special inspection and materials testing services on time, within budget, and in compliance with client requirements and company standards. Provide oversight and mentoring on proposals and cost estimates to ensure accurate scoping and resource allocation. Oversee daily operations with a focus on safety, staff development, quality, and timely deliverables, while partnering with leadership on business development and client relationships.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices.
  • Recruit, train, mentor, and partner with your leadership team to develop all employees in the department.
  • Collaborate with the office and department leadership teams to prepare and execute the department annual business plan.
  • Understand and manage project-related risks. Be familiar with what could go wrong on a project and how to mitigate risks. Be familiar with company risk policies.
  • Promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor quality standards and practices. Engage other professionals in the organization on complex projects at their onset to ensure project quality is delivered.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in technical discipline practiced by the Firm including Engineering, or Geology and 8 years’ practice experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 12 years’ related experience.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

Preferred Certification:

  • Certification or licensure in field of expertise (PE preferred).
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • Professional certifications in any of the following areas: PTI, ICC, ACI, AWS, WABO, OBOA, NICET
