The Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing geotechnical laboratory testing, as well as supporting field testing activities when needed. This role works with the Laboratory Manager/Laboratory Coordinator to manage laboratory workflow, maintain testing equipment and calibration records, ensure compliance with quality and safety standards, and prepare accurate test documentation and reports. The Laboratory Technician works closely with Project Managers, engineering technicians and laboratory personnel to ensure testing services are completed accurately, safely, and on schedule.
• Perform laboratory testing of geotechnical materials including soils, aggregates, , and related materials in accordance with established procedures, project specifications, and company quality standards.
• Conduct field testing and observation activities as assigned.
• Transport material samples and associated documentation between project sites and laboratories.
• Document testing activities, observations, and results accurately and prepare written and electronic reports for timely submission to Project Managers.
• Review and perform basic analysis of testing data to verify accuracy prior to reporting results.
• Work with Laboratory Coordinator/Laboratory Manager to ensure testing services are completed efficiently, accurately, and within project schedules.
• Ensure laboratory work areas, equipment, and vehicles are maintained in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
• Assist with compliance to company Quality Management System (QMS), laboratory procedures, and testing protocols.
• Drive company vehicles, including pickup trucks such as a Ford F-150 or equivalent, to transport equipment and materials as needed.
• Perform pre-task planning and adhere to all company safety policies and procedures.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 1-2 years of relevant experience or the equivalent in training and related experience.
- Experience with laptop computer use and Microsoft Word and Excel
- A valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Certifications in one or more of the following areas:
- NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing in one or more of the following categories: Asphalt, Concrete, Soils.
- NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical in one or more of the following categories: Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist
- ICC certification in one or more of the following categories: Reinforced Concrete, Spray-applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post-Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel – Bolting, Structural Steel – Welding.
- American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Associate Welding Inspector (CAWI)
- American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level II certification in more than one of the following areas: Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
- Other national, regional, state, and local Materials related certifications requiring experience and written examination will also be considered if deemed appropriate by the Terracon Department Manager.
Required Qualifications:
- ACI certification in one or more of the following areas:
- Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I
- Concrete Strength Testing Technician
- Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
- Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and smell. The employee is periodically required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and periodically lift and/or move more than 100 pounds using team lifting. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; outside weather conditions; extreme cold and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but will periodically be loud and require the use of hearing protection.
