Job Description

Join Terracon’s Data & Analytics Team as a Data and AI Governance Platform Steward

Are you passionate about turning data into trusted, actionable insights?

Terracon is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented individual to help drive our enterprise data and AI governance efforts forward. As a key member of our Data Governance team, you’ll collaborate across the organization—with business leaders, engineers, IT, and security professionals—to shape how data is defined, documented, and governed.

You’ll play a vital role in building and maintaining the metadata, terminology, and policies that ensure our data is accurate, accessible, and aligned with business goals.

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Understands the principles of data governance and metadata management.
  • Thrives in a collaborative environment and communicates clearly—in writing, speaking, and in remote meetings.
  • Can quickly learn our business language, systems, and processes, and translate them into structured governance artifacts.
  • Has experience (or strong interest) in data quality practices, system documentation, extract-transform-load (ETL) processes, and tools like the Alation Data Governance platform.
  • This is an entry-to-mid-level opportunity—perfect for someone eager to grow their career in data governance and AI enablement.

Provide stewardship support for Terracon’s Data and AI Governance Platform (Alation), enabling data and AI owners and experts across corporate and operational services to manage metadata and governance artifacts effectively.

Specific Job Tasks

  • Work with business units to identify operational data sources and TO-BE desired data sources and workflows.
  • Work with the Operational Excellence Team to integrate business workflow mapping with Alation.
  • Work with Artificial Intelligence and Analytics Teams to design a governance framework around AI/ML Algorithms and Processes
  • Work with business units and IT to connect to remote databases, ingest schema into Alation, and write FME Workbenches
  • Maintain and promote weekly, monthly, and semi-annual communications and training programs
  • Integrate Feature Manipulation Engine (FME) FLOW workbenches for data quality assessment of existing data sources.

Key Responsibilities and Expertise:

  • Metadata Stewardship
    • Collect and curate metadata describing operational, production, and enterprise data systems across Terracon.
    • Collaborate with data and AI experts to validate metadata for accuracy, completeness, and clarity.
    • Facilitate approval workflows with data and AI owners for defined terms and associated metadata.
    • Partner with data analysts, IT, and business stakeholders to author and publish governance policies in Alation, covering data and AI model lifecycle activities (creation, access, update, archival, and deletion).
  • Platform and Communication Support
    • Support the implementation, expansion, and continuous improvement of the Alation platform.
    • Develop and maintain governance communications through internal channels (Intranet, leadership newsletters, Alation announcements).
    • Perform metadata acquisition, management, analysis, and visualization to support governance initiatives.
    • Take the lead on providing content and updating the D&A Governance Team on the Terracon Intranet.
  • Governance Integration and Quality Assurance
    • Engage with IT and operations teams during the design phase of data and AI systems to embed governance best practices
    • Ensure data integrity and compliance with corporate governance standards.
    • Contribute to the development of technical documentation and training materials.
    • Validate that all data deliverables meet quality expectations and align with enterprise standards.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS, geography, data science, environmental science, engineering, computer science or related field with 3 years’ related experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 7 years’ related experience.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Experience with database management systems.
  • Familiarity with relational databases and various programming languages.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
