General Responsibilities:

This position is for Practice Area Leader of our Structural Practice Group (SPG) in the Charlotte Office (CLT) of Terracon’s Facilities Division.  The ideal candidate will have some general experience or knowledge with each of the Structural sub-practice areas, including Structural Diagnostics, Remedial Design and Construction, Construction Phase Monitoring, and New Design and Construction. This position aligns with the Terracon position of Group Manager, which oversees a specialty service line that may include a small number of employees.

This position is a crucial part of the CLT leadership team. Terracon has prioritized this position as a strategic move toward accelerated growth for the CLT and SPG in the Carolina's Region. During this growth period, this role will include the responsibilities of a Senior Project Manager on proposals and projects, especially projects of complexity.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • PRACTICE AREA LEADER   
    • Supervise the daily operations of the SPG including staff training, development, and performance review, utilization of equipment and facilities, safety oversight, quality of services and work product, timely delivery of services and deliverables, and adherence to policies and procedure.    
    • With support from the Department/Office Manager, prepare and execute annual business plan for the SPG.   
    • With support from the Department/Office Manager, oversee and manage the success of the key SPG metrics of revenue growth, staff chargeability, project billing and collections, and project profitability.   
    • Support the growth and development of Terracon at all levels, following our corporate values and generally aligning with the company objectives and services in the Corporate Strategic Plan.    
  • STAFF
    • Work with OM and other Practice Area Leaders to support CLT workload and maintain goals 
    • With support from the Office Manager, lead, develop and manage employee staffing plans, recruitment, selection and onboarding to support workload and growth initiatives. 
    • Develop, support, and track support individual growth plans for SPG staff.
    • Identify cross-training opportunities for SPG staff.
    • Empower and delegate SPG staff to support SPG and region initiatives.
    • Develop and support sub-practice area leaders as needed.
  • BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
    • With the support of Office Manager and Office Business Development Coordinators (BDC) perform business and client development activities to identify, develop, win, and execute project opportunities and build and maintain client relationships.
    • Support the BDC in the Region for external business development activities.
  • MARKETING
    • Work with office BDC and region marketing staff to develop SPG specific project profiles and service sell sheets.
    • Produce and maintain project profiles including project information databases for completed projects.
  • SAFETY/IIF
    • Lead safety efforts for SPG and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Be responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrate safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects.
    • Be an office leader for Terracon Safety practices.
    • With support from the Department/Office Manager, monitor safety metrics for the SPG and CLT to meet published goals.
    • Ensure that SPG Staff holds and maintains appropriate safety certifications to perform required tasks.
    • Perform regular site-safety check-ins and coaching on SPG staff to meet or exceed CLT goals.
    • Work with CLT Office Safety Coordinator as required to respond to office and external initiatives.
  • PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND DELIVERY
    • Monitor all projects in progress in the SPG to ensure that work is executed on time and in accordance with the client’s requirements and within company policies, procedures and standards.    
    • Lead project management on large and complex projects, including projects with multiple FAC practice areas and/or multiple Service Lines. 
    • Perform and/or support SPG staff in support of project delivery: 
    • Work with clients and internal resources to define project scopes, schedules and budget. 
    • Supervise the preparation of proposals and cost estimates to clients to ensure proper scoping of services, availability of manpower and pricing to achieve desired profitability.  
    • Lead interactions with client and stakeholders to ensure their goals are being considered in execution of the work. 
    • Design, communicate, and implement a project plan for completing a project.  
    • Lead safety efforts including preparation and compliance with approved safety plan.  
    • Resolve operational problems and minimize delays.  
    • Identify, develop, and gather necessary resources to complete the project.  
    • Prepare designs and work specifications; develop schedules, budgets and forecasts; select materials, equipment, project staff, and contractors.  
    • Identify the need for standards to support workflow.  
    • Estimate costs, resources, and time required to complete a project.  
    • Prepare forecasts for expenditures and manages scope, schedule to meet budget.  
    • Monitor activities, allocate resources, and assign tasks to ensure targets are met.  
    • Partner with other departments or offices to secure specialized resources for the project.  
    • Conduct project meetings and prepare reports to communicate the status of the project within and beyond the project team.  
    • Coach and mentor project staff and assist them to solve problems.  
    • Coordinate with APRs to ensure appropriate oversight is in place and sufficient time allowed for quality reviews    
    • Coordinates with accounting for financial management of business intelligence, invoicing and collections    
    • Develop understanding and be aware of project-related risk. Be familiar with what could go wrong on a project and how to protect the Company.  Be familiar with company risk policies.
    • Promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor quality standards and practices. Engage APRs on projects at their onset.  
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Minimum 8-11 years’ experience.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering preferred.
  • A valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history may be required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terracon Authorized Project Reviewer status required.
