Terracon is seeking a dynamic Environmental Department Manager to lead and grow our Environmental Services practice in Sarasota, Florida. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced environmental professional who is passionate about developing teams, building strong client relationships, driving operational excellence, and delivering outstanding consulting services.

As a key member of our leadership team, you will oversee environmental consulting projects, mentor technical staff, expand our client base, and contribute to the continued success and growth of Terracon throughout Southwest Florida. What You'll Do

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of environmental professionals.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, safety, and technical excellence.
  • Support recruiting, hiring, training, and career development initiatives.
  • Guide staff in project execution, professional growth, and leadership development

Business Development & Client Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with public and private sector clients.
  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities across the Sarasota and Southwest Florida markets.
  • Collaborate with regional leadership to develop and execute strategic growth plans.
  • Prepare proposals, participate in client presentations, and negotiate contracts.

Project & Operational Management

  • Oversee environmental consulting projects from proposal through completion.
  • Ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to Terracon's quality standards.
  • Manage departmental financial performance, including revenue growth, utilization, and profitability.
  • Monitor project risks and implement effective solutions to achieve successful outcomes.

Technical Oversight

  • Provide technical guidance for environmental investigations, assessments, remediation, compliance, and due diligence services.
  • Review reports, work plans, and technical deliverables to ensure quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Stay current with evolving environmental regulations and industry best practices.
  • Lead safety efforts for the team through pre-task planning.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for preparation of proposals and cost estimates.
  • With support from the Office Manager perform business and client development activities.
  • With support from the Office Manager develop and manage employee staffing plans, recruitment, selection and on-boarding.
  • With support from the Office Manager prepare and execute annual business plan for the department.
  • With support from the Office Manager oversee and manage the success of the key department metrics of revenue growth, staff chargeability, project billing and collections, and project profitability.
  • Develop understanding and be aware of project-related risk. Be familiar with what could go wrong on a project and how to protect the Company. Be familiar with company risk policies.
  • Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects.
  • Responsible for continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor and promote quality standards and practices.
  • Responsible for providing consistent quality standards on project and proposal delivery.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in technical discipline practiced by the Firm including Engineering, Environmental Science or Geology and 5 years’ practice experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 9 years’ related experience.
  • Master’s degree or PhD preferred.
  • Demonstrated success managing projects, budgets, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong client development and business relationship skills.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities.
  • A valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history may be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification or licensure in field of expertise.
  • Terracon Authorized Project Reviewer status preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as PG, PE, CHMM, PMP, or similar credentials.
  • Experience with environmental site assessments, remediation, regulatory compliance, industrial hygiene, or related services.
  • Prior department, office, or business unit management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of Florida environmental regulations and permitting processes.
