Job Description
Terracon Consultants, Inc. located in Winter Park, Florida is seeking, on-call Archaeological Field Technicians (i.e., employed on a per project basis) for projects throughout Florida. We have multiple positions available to support upcoming projects by performing Phase I archaeological survey fieldwork. Duties can include (but are not limited to) excavation of shovel test pits, sifting, bagging and sorting artifacts, keeping fieldnotes, and potential additional duties as needed.
General Responsibilities:
Provide archaeological support which may include archaeological surveys, testing, or excavations, and corresponding documentation. Adhere to strict safety standards.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
- Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
- Responsible for assisting with archaeological fieldwork, such as survey, excavation, artifact collection and basic documentation.
- Conduct archaeological surveys or excavations using common archaeological tools and methods under the supervision of a Crew Chief or higher.
- Identify artifacts and basic stratigraphy, recording information on standardized forms.
- Assist more senior staff with other tasks as needed.
- Maintain equipment.
- Communicate basic information to Crew Chief or Archaeologist.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:- Working outside and being exposed to varying weather conditions.
- Ability to carry equipment (50 lbs or less) and traverse uneven terrain for extended periods of time.
- Ability to walk long distances, recurring bending, standing, stooping, lifting, reaching, hand and shovel digging/excavation, and kneeling for extended periods of time.
- Ability to travel and a flexible work schedule.
- B.A./B.S. in Archaeology, Anthropology, or other closely related fields. Education and/or archaeological fieldwork experience in the Southeast, United States preferred.
- Previous experience in archaeology fieldwork or completion of an archaeology field school
- Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License with acceptable violation history
- Ability to follow instructions, work independently.
- Must be able to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
