Job Description
General Responsibilities:
Are you looking to join a growing cultural resources team to work on exciting archaeological projects? We are looking for a Field Director to help manage our field crews in our Tempe, Arizona office as part of our Environmental Services Line, Cultural Resources Group in the Western Rocky Mountain Division. As part of our team, you will collaborate with our established PIs and network of archaeologists across the nation. This is a full-time salaried position with health care and retirement benefits.

This role will provide archaeological services for a broad array of projects and clients. This may include conducting field work, identifying artifacts, creating and managing spatial data, laboratory analysis, writing reports, preparing proposals, and consulting with clients and stakeholders.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Maintain quality standards on all projects.
  • Supervise fieldwork and contribute to reporting efforts.
  • Manage a field crew and ensure that Field Technicians and Crew Leads are performing fieldwork to high standards.
  • Conduct archival research and/or field documentation and ensure the team is recording appropriate information and/or conducting appropriate analyses.
  • Confidently identify artifacts and recognize natural and cultural features/stratigraphy.
  • Responsible for ensuring field forms, data collection, and sample collection are consistent, complete, accurate and follow project-specific requirements.
  • Familiarity with cultural resource regulations and laws in the state of Arizona (e.g., Arizona Antiquities Act) and at the federal level (e.g., Section 106).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Graduate degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field (MA, MS, PhD) and a minimum of 2 years’ related experience.
  • Familiarity with and training in the archaeology and/or history of Arizona and New Mexico.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks such as lifting and walking on uneven surfaces carrying at least 20 lbs. of equipment and the ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in extreme (hot/cold) weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
Preferred Certification:
  • Registered Archaeologist (RA) or Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) certification
  • A minimum of 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Professional experience directing crews as a field director for cultural resources projects in Arizona and/or New Mexico.
