As a Construction Materials Field Professional, you are entrusted to protect our client’s biggest investments and work alongside our industry partners to help solve their construction related challenges. Your role includes performing critical materials testing, observation and inspection services on construction projects that impact the quality of our communities including: transportation projects, such as roadways, bridges, airports, large commercial developments, power generation and transmission, such as wind farms and solar farms, healthcare, K-12 schools and higher education facilities, and more. By using Terracon’s innovative technology you will provide high quality, high speed, documentation of your results/observations to our clients and industry partners. This service keeps everyone informed and allows our partners to address deviations quickly, saving time and money. Critical testing and inspections may include field or laboratory testing of soils, concrete, and asphalt as well as field observations and inspections for foundations, reinforcing steel, masonry and structural steel to improve the durability and safety and ensure compliance with project plans and specifications.

In this position, you will travel 100% of the time to work on multiple high-profile projects such as transportation, commercial buildings, wind farms, and more in many geographical areas. General Responsibilities:
The Traveling Construction Technician will perform various observations and tests on construction materials such as soils, concrete, masonry, reinforcing steel, and asphalt. Throughout the projects, you will communicate with Project Managers, client representatives, contractor’s representatives and other key stakeholders regarding testing and inspection results. Tests are performed on building construction projects and further tested in Terracon laboratories. Successful candidates will receive in-depth technical training and professional certifications as they advance in the position.
Essential Role and Responsibilities:
- Travel to and from projects as they are assigned to you
- Under direction of staff professionals or project managers, assists with tasks and perform basic sample tests and observation of soils, aggregates, concrete, masonry, reinforcing steel and asphalt.
- Document and prepare sample testing and observation data using a laptop or tablet device; submit findings accurately to a Project Manager and effectively communicate testing and inspection results.
- Will be placed in a progressively increased role of training and responsibility in work assignments.
- Ensure that all testing equipment and tools are properly calibrated and maintained.
- Follows safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Performs pre-task planning prior to executing work. Reports any safety issues or concerns to management.
- Maintains quality standards on all projects and works cohesively as a team.
- Transports materials safely from various job sites to the lab using a company provided vehicle.
- 100% Travel Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 5-10 years of relevant experience or the equivalent in training and related experience.
- Experience with laptop computer use and Microsoft Word and Excel
- ACI certification in one or more of the following areas:
- Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I
- Concrete Strength Testing Technician
- Certified in radiation safety and Nuclear Density Gauge operation.
- American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), or
- Structural Steel and/or nondestructive testing services: ASNT Level II
- Relevant certification for the services or project requirements (e.g. Registered Roofing Observer (RRO))
- Successful completion of related internal safety certifications.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
Certifications in one or more of the following areas:
- NICET Level III certification in Construction Materials Testing in two or more of the following categories or NICET Level III in at least one of the following categories: Asphalt, Concrete, Soils.
- NICET Level III certification in Geotechnical in two or more of the following categories: Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist
- ICC certification in two or more of the following categories: Reinforced Concrete, Spray-applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post-Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel – Bolting, Structural Steel – Welding.
- American Welding Society (AWS) Senior Certified Welding Inspector (SCWI)
- American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) Level III certification in one or more of the following areas: Visual Testing (VT), Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Dye Penetrant Testing (PT), Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT).
- Other national, regional, state, and local Materials related certifications requiring experience and written examination will also be considered if deemed appropriate by the Terracon Department Manager.
The national standard salary range for this position is $23.50-$32.75. The base range may be adjusted based on the specific location of the applicant. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
