General Responsibilities:
If your passion lies in planning and assisting with challenging projects, then we invite you to explore with us! Join our Regional team and be part of a growing National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance group as part of our growth in the Chicagoland Region.

In this role you will work closely with our North Central Division Environmental Planning and NEPA Program Managers and other NEPA Project Managers across the United States to prepare winning proposals and manage federally funded projects for public and private clients, as well as federal clients. The projects will range from Categorical Exclusion documents to Environmental Assessments for several type of projects. Proposed projects to analyze include renewable energy production, transportation facilities (multimodal facilities and roadways), and stand-alone structures, among other types.

While managing NEPA projects you will work closely with Midwest and other national staff and subject matter experts who conduct the technical field studies, analysis, and prepare the permitting requests. You will also have the opportunity to mentor staff on quality data generations and report writing.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Managing NEPA projects (categorical exclusion applicability documents and environmental assessment) that could include field studies and permitting.
  • Preparing proposals for NEPA related services.
  • Preparing technical sections of NEPA documents, including baseline and impacts.
  • Collaborate with other Environmental Planning and NEPA project managers and practitioners in other Terracon offices to team on large project efforts and promote best practices.
  • Mentor staff.
  • Meet with clients and regulatory agencies to facilitate accurate project schedules, define actions, and review proposed level of review under specific agency requirements.
  • Promote continuous quality review and improvement on projects.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, or related discipline and 7 or more years of experience in the practice of NEPA/Environmental Compliance.
  • Experience with multiple federal agency requirements under NEPA.
  • Ability to mentor junior staff.
  • Ability to travel out of town between 10-20 percent of the normal work week.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Technical writing skills and provide feedback to technical staff.
  • Experience managing or conducting studies for federally-funded projects, overseeing technical studies and providing regulatory guidance.
  • Task management skills with ability to complete work on schedule and within budget.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Strong knowledge of environmental consulting practices and environmental laws.
  • Ability to present complex knowledge to conference audiences and clients.
