General Responsibilities:
Terracon’s Austin office is seeking an entrepreneurial, growth-minded professional to help lead our Cultural Resources practice, starting early 2025. Cultural Resources is part of our Environmental Planning group, which also includes full-service Natural Resources capabilities. Our team works collaboratively with these and other Environmental practice areas to support Terracon’s regional, statewide, and national client base. We are seeking a candidate who understands and is committed to program growth; is a strong team builder, communicator, and mentor; and who brings technical expertise and depth to our program.
The successful candidate will be part of an interdisciplinary team including archaeologists, architectural historians, historians, historic preservationists, conservationists, environmental scientists and engineers, and geotechnical professionals. The qualified candidate will have strong technical writing capabilities, must be able to write at a professional level, and present ideas in a well-thought-out and comprehensive manner. Austin’s Environmental Planning (ENVP) team has more than doubled the number of practitioners and almost doubled the revenue growth over the last four years. The successful candidate will lead a team of archeologists and be responsible for program growth. The archeological team conducts studies that include desktop reviews, Phase I surveys, site eligibility evaluations, and mitigation planning. Our clients include City and County agencies, school districts, national and local retailers, private entities, commercial real property developers and managers, telecom companies, energy providers, law and architecture firms, financial institutions, and construction engineers.
Essential Role and Responsibilities:
- Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report safety challenges or concerns to management.
- Oversee and/or contribute to desktop constraints analyses (DCAs), critical environmental impacts analyses (CEIAs), Phase I survey research design and execution, site eligibility determinations, and mitigation planning.
- Manage Cultural Resource projects within Austin and Central Texas. Work with our team more broadly to continue to grow Terracon’s Archeological practice in the Texas Division and throughout the company.
- Oversee and/or assist with the development of cultural resources sections within National Environmental Policy Act documents.
- Collaborate with Environmental Planning managers and staff in other Terracon offices to team up on large project efforts and promote best practices.
- Mentor cultural resources staff.
- Develop understanding and be aware of project-related risks. Employ best practices for risk management and loss prevention. Learn and comply with company risk management policies.
- Promote continuous quality review and improvement on projects through participation in Terracon’s Authorized Project Reviewer program.
- Conduct client development activities and work with our marketing team to continue and develop in natural resource services in Austin and Central Texas.
- Understand and implement technical requirements to complete client projects by directing and supervising field staff to sample, test and collect data and/or document site activities.
- Perform site visits, field observations and field data collection in area of technical expertise.
- Other duties as assigned by the Austin Environmental Planning Group Manager and/or the Texas Division Environmental Planning Program Manager.
Requirements:
- Advanced graduate degree in Anthropology, Archeology, or related discipline and more than 8 years of experience in the practice
- Previous experience preparing proposals, building budgets, and understanding and managing project finances
- Familiarity with the Antiquities Code of Texas, Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and other pertinent legislation
- Ability to direct staff technicians regarding data collection, preparation of figures and maps, and report production. Ability to mentor junior staff and supervise staff
- To facilitate successful connections with direct reports, candidate will be required to work from the Austin office no fewer than three days each week.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history
- Ability to travel out-of-town between 10% and 25% of the normal work week
- Flexible work schedule, to ensure project timelines are completed
- Possess strong writing skills
- Ability to work on a team and build networks across the division and company
- Ability to pass a drug screen and background check
- Capability to drive full-sized pickup trucks
- This position comes with flexible work arrangements but carries an expectation of in-office presence at least three days out of a five-day work week.
Preferences:
- Active professional society membership in local, regional, statewide, and/or national associations.
- GIS capabilities
- Demonstrable technical proficiency with at least one material culture category
