Terracon is growing and seeks an entry level construction material lab testing technician to join our Material Services team in our Rocky Hill, CT office. Our CT Materials department services clients during the construction phase of a wide variety of projects, including power transmission lines, infrastructure upgrades, schools and colleges, retail building, and large distribution centers for both local and national clients throughout Southern New England. You will have the opportunity to work on-site alongside contractors with the support of the local project management team and an in-house testing laboratory. General Responsibilities:
  • Perform laboratory testing on soils, aggregate, concrete, and asphalt per ASTM and AASHTO standards under supervision or higher-level staff.
  • Provides clear documentation of findings and results.
  • Communicates information to Laboratory Manager and discusses accuracy of data in preparation for submittal.
  • Submits documentation and communicates results as directed by the Lab Manager.
  • Will be placed in a progressively increased role of training and responsibility in work assignments.
  • Maintains lab and field equipment.
  • Maintains clean work environment through good housekeeping.
  • Follow safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Perform pre-task planning prior to executing work. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Under close supervision of higher level technicians or staff professionals, assist on tasks and perform basic testing and observations duties.
  • Provides clear documentation of findings and results.
  • Communicates information to Project Manager and discusses accuracy of data in preparation for submittal.
  • Submits documentation and communicates results as directed by the Project Manager
  • Will be placed in a progressively increased role of training and responsibility in work assignments.
  • Maintains assigned equipment.
  • Follow safety rules and practices and other safety requirements for all projects. Perform pre-task planning prior to executing work. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma (associates or bachelor's degree coursework in science preferred)
  • Any prior laboratory or construction materials experience preferred
  • Experience with laptop computer use and Microsoft Work and Excel.
  • Ability to multitask in fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to communicate with and service customers effectively via telephone and in person.
  • Uses close attention to detail and good record keeping practices.
Require Certification:
  • Obtain ACI certification within 90 days of hire
  • Successful completion of related internal safety certification.
Preferred Certification:
  • Any previous ACI, NETTCP, or NICET certification.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
This job will require individuals to work in a construction materials lab and be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds (e.g. lifting and operating testing equipment, obtaining and carrying material samples). Position requires the employee to regularly stand, walk, stoop, or kneel; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; and talk or hear.
