Job Description
Terracon’s Columbus Office is seeking an Environmental Staff Scientist to join our Team! The candidate would primarily grow the environmental department withAsbestos and Industrial Hygiene related projects, including but not limited to initial building inspections, asbestos and lead abatement oversight, industrial hygiene inspections, and phase 1 assessments. Job duties with building inspections include assisting with collection of field documentation, air and bulk samples, review of laboratory documents, and data reporting. As applicable, if an Air Monitoring Specialist, the candidate would be responsible for abatement oversight including contractor interaction, operation of field air monitoring equipment, and collection of field documentation. Job duties with industrial hygiene inspections include assisting with noise surveys, radon surveys, microbial investigations with sampling, and data reporting. Assistance with phase 1 assessments include site visits and data review. Other duties may include assisting with testing and sampling of environmental materials in air, water, and soils. If required, the candidate will be responsible for cleaning and maintaining field monitoring equipment. Candidate will be required to adhere to strict company safety standards.

Essential Role and Responsibilities:

Performs standardized and sometimes complex field tests as directed and/or special inspections as required.
  • Assist with sampling of suspect asbestos-containing building materials in accordance with AHERA guidelines.
  • Assist with sampling of painted coatings (via paint chip or XRF) in residential, commercial and industrial settings.
  • Perform air monitoring inspections during asbestos abatement projects.
  • Calibrate field monitoring equipment such as PID or combustible gas indicator.
  • Assist with sampling for noise levels within industrial settings.
  • Assist with sampling suspect microbial growth and indoor air quality.
  • Assist with installation and maintenance of remediation systems.
  • Assist drill crews in obtaining soil and groundwater samples.
  • Conduct monitoring well sampling.
  • Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Be responsible for maintaining quality standards on all projects.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science or related science field and a minimum of 3 years’ related experience.
  • Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 7 years’ related experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
Preferred:
  • Certification in field of expertise preferred. Examples include:
    • Asbestos Inspector
    • Asbestos Management Planner
    • Asbestos Air-Monitoring Specialist (Project Monitor)
    • Lead Paint Inspector
    • Lead Risk Assessor
    • Mold Technician
  • Associates or bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health, Environmental Science or related scientific field
  • Other national, regional, state, and local environmental related certifications requiring experience and written examination will also be considered if deemed appropriate by the Terracon Department Manager.
