Job Description
We are seeking a dynamic individual to join our team as a Geotechnical & Construction Materials Laboratory Supervisor/Manager! In this role, you will play a crucial part in overseeing the activities of our laboratory, ensuring that testing services for materials such as soils, aggregates, concrete, and asphalt are conducted safely, efficiently, and in accordance with our quality protocols and project requirements.
Responsibilities include supervising laboratory staff, coordinating training initiatives, and maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of our laboratory and testing equipment. As a leader, you will directly monitor and supervise laboratory activities to ensure they are executed on time and meet client and project specifications, while adhering to our company policies, procedures, and standards.
You will also play a key role in upholding our company's Quality program and Construction Materials Quality Management System (QMS), guaranteeing that laboratory processes and personnel consistently meet our rigorous standards, and maintain its current AASHTO, CMRL accreditations. You will plan, recruit, and select personnel for the laboratory and ensure that laboratory personnel are properly trained, supervised, and equipped with the necessary tools and equipment to ensure their personal safety in the office and laboratory. Efficient utilization of facilities and equipment assigned to the laboratory will be under your supervision, and you will have the opportunity to make requests for additional resources as needed to meet client demands.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
- Provides supplemental operating policies and procedures unique to the laboratory to ensure that the testing services are accomplished consistent with Terracon’s quality protocol and in an orderly and efficient manner.
- Works with the Terracon’s Technical Manager and Coordinates all internal and external audits including but not limited to AASHTO and CMRL accreditations and maintains all required documentation required by these agencies.
- Maintains laboratory’s proficiency sample programs with AASHTO and CMRL every year.
- Manages all the required maintenance and calibrations for the laboratory testing equipment.
- Works with project management during preparation of proposals and quotations for laboratory testing services to ensure proper scoping of services, availability of manpower, and appropriate pricing to render a profit.
- Evaluates the performance of all employees within the laboratory and assists them in their professional development and growth, consistent with company policies and procedures.
- Assists the Materials and/or Geotechnical Department Manager with the preparation of annual business plan, directs the short-range business development activities of laboratory personnel to ensure that adequate fees are available to support the manpower staffing levels.
- Directly supervises the administrative systems of the laboratory to ensure that reports, proposals, and information required to serve the client are properly prepared and reported.
- Develop understanding and be aware of project-related risk. Be familiar with what could go wrong on a project and how to protect the Company. Be familiar with company risk policies.
- Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects.
- Promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor quality standards and practices. Engage APRs on projects at their onset.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or related field and 5 years’ experience performing laboratory tests on construction and geotechnical materials. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 9 years’ related experience.
- Certification by qualified national, regional or state authorities (ACI, NICET, DOT) or in-house certification is required in areas such as concrete, aggregates, soil and rock, or road and paving materials.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure or ability to obtain within a year of hire.

The expected salary range for this position is listed below. The base range may be adjusted based on the specific location of the applicant. Final agreed upon compensation is based upon individual qualifications and experience.
$100000 - $155000 annually
