Job Description
General Description: Manage and supervise a geotechnical department of staff dedicated to support of transportation projects in the Carolinas and beyond. As an employee-owner you will lead our transportation focused geotechnical team. Projects include major freeways, interchanges, bridges, and parkways. These are high profile projects that get recognition throughout our nationwide company. You will be working with an established transportation team of approximately 8 engineers and additional supporting field staff that seeks to grow.

General Responsibilities:
Supervise or monitor geotechnical projects associated with transportation projects to ensure that work is executed on time and in accordance with the client’s requirements and within company policies, procedures, and standards. Supervise the preparation of proposals and cost estimates to clients to ensure proper scoping of services, availability of manpower and pricing to achieve desired profitability. Supervise the daily operations of a department including staff training, development, and performance review, utilization of equipment and facilities, safety oversight, quality of services and work product, timely delivery of services and deliverables, and adherence to policies and procedure. Plan for and participate in business development activities to identify, develop, win, and execute project opportunities and build and maintain client relationships. Provide engineering and consulting services for a broad array of projects and clients. This may include performing and/or leading field investigations, engineering analysis, calculations, and recommendations, design and development of plans and specifications, observation and inspection, and the writing, preparation, and review of related reports for the services provided. Prepare proposals and cost estimates, track and evaluate project progress, budgets, and recommend changes. Apply sound engineering principles and be able to communicate complex engineering issues and concepts to technical and non-technical clients and project teams. Familiar with the NCDOT, SCDOT and AASHTO specifications and processes.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

Lead and manage group of professionals including oversight, workload management, and mentoring. With support from the Office Manager perform business and client development activities, prepare and execute annual business plan, oversee and manage the key department metrics of revenue growth, staff chargeability, project billing and collections, and project profitability. Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects. Promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor quality standards and practices. Senior level engineering providing technical direction required for production and completion of both routine and unique or complex projects. Provide review of projects requiring complex and innovative investigation techniques and supervise the analysis and formulation of recommendations in written reports to clients; provides technical review of reports. Lead technical training and make informed decisions based upon state-of-the-art technology issues. Serve as an Authorized Project Reviewer. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering. Minimum 8-11 years’ experience. Master’s degree in Engineering (preferred). Experience/knowledge of MicroStation and/or OpenRoads (preferred). Professional Engineer (PE) registration (required). Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in technical discipline practiced by the Firm including Engineering, Environmental Science or Geology and 8 years’ practice experience. Or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 12 years’ related experience.
  • Master’s degree or PhD preferred.
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
Preferred Certification:
  • Certification or licensure in field of expertise.
