Job Description

General Responsibilities and Requirements:

As an entry level Laborer, an Exploration Team Member 1 (ETM1) with Terracon is an assistant to the Drill Foreman on a two-person team to perform drilling operation for the collection of soil samples. The primary role will include the writing of boring logs to record drilling information and soil sample identification and labeling in real-time fashion on project sites. (On the job training will be provided.)

Other activities may include site layout (handheld GPS), backfilling and/or site clean-up, and recording water levels. Periodic safety training and maintenance tasks will also be required.

Essential Functions and Duties:

  • An ability to follow multiple verbal and written directives simultaneously while actively functioning in a dynamic environment.
  • Train in the duties that pertain to performing test borings with an emphasis on proper field log documentation and sample preservation. Clear hand writing, attention to detail, and following instructions in a fast-paced environment are necessary skills.
  • Drives medium to heavy duty pickup trucks and trailers to various job sites. Will need to obtain and keep in good standing a Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card (physical required) within the first two months of employment.
  • A preferred candidate would have or have a willingness to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and performs required truck, trailer & equipment inspections and maintain a DOT Digital Log for hours of operation.
  • Keep, wear, and maintain at all times required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Including but not limited to; high visibility shirts, jackets or vests, above-the-ankle lace-up steel toed boots, gloves, safety glasses, hard hat, hearing protection.
  • Learn and practice all safety procedures for working with, on and around drilling equipment. Become familiar with the basic operation of the drilling equipment with emphasis on "Kill Switches" and pinch points.
  • Familiarize and learn the different the different types of augers, bits, rods, tooling, and equipment used during the drilling process.
  • Loads appropriate drilling, sampling and well installation tools and supplies onto trucks or drill rigs as directed by the drill foreman.
  • Obtain additional OSHA 40hour Hazwoper, 1st Aid, and CPR certificates.
  • Perform miscellaneous maintenance duties in field or shop such as sweep & clean shop, putting away supply orders, cleaning and/or maintenance support trucks, trailers, and drilling equipment & tooling. This may require the use of grinders, cutting torches, welder, other tooling and all associated PPE. Cleaning the yard, collecting scrap steel directed by supervisors.

Physical Requirements:

This position is physically demanding. The physical demands described here are representative to these that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Average workdays are Monday-Friday and range from 8-12 hours.
  • Employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 60 pounds, occasionally move and/or lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Employee must regularly twist, screw and lift equipment and supplies. Employee must regularly shovel, sweep and scrape various types of soils, concrete and debris.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, coordination depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Essential Skills/Abilities:
An ability to follow multiple verbal and written directives simultaneously while actively functioning in a dynamic environment.

  • This position requires a valid operator's class driver's license with a good driving record and obtaining a class 'A' CDL and DOT medical card and required DOT random drug testing program within the first four months of employment.

Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts, cold, and heat. The work is outdoors, year-round, in Iowa’s weather conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is related to the use of heavy equipment and can be loud.
  • Overnight travel will be required with this position; an estimated average would be 20% to 50% of the time. Usually travel is between one to five nights but can be up to several weeks on a large project.

  • Per Diem for overnight travel

  • 401k = 60% matching the first 7% of your compensation, once eligible

Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Limited or no experience required
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
  • Ability to obtain Medical Card within first 30 days of employment

Preferred Certification and Skills:

  • Ability to obtain a commercial driver’s license within first 90 days of employment.
  • OSHA 40-Hour Course
  • CPR/First Aid Trained
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
